Start from the sessions you actually did last month and buy the cheapest watch that records them well. For most people that is an entry level GPS watch, because the two things you pay a flagship for, multi-day battery and full offline maps, are the two things most owners never use. Spend the difference on a chest strap if you train by heart rate, and on nothing at all if you do not.
Buy for last month, not for next year
This is the category where overbuying is most common. The specifications that sell a watch are extremes: a hundred hours of GPS, navigation across a mountain range, a screen readable in alpine glare. Those are real capabilities, and they answer a question most buyers are not asking.
Ask a narrower one. Open whatever app already holds your training and look at the last four weeks. How long was your longest session? Did you go anywhere you did not already know the way? Did you ever finish with the watch close to flat? Did you look at a number afterwards and change what you did next? Those four answers pick the watch. The race you might enter next year does not.

Battery life separates the tiers
More than any other number, battery life is what you buy as you move up a range, and it has the clearest failure mode: a watch that dies at hour nine of a ten hour day has recorded nothing and cannot navigate you home.
Read the figure carefully, because there are several. Smartwatch mode, screen mostly off and no GPS, runs to days or weeks. GPS mode is the one that matters, and it drops sharply once you add multi-band positioning, an always-on bright screen or music. Treat the quoted figure as a best case, then take your longest realistic session, double it, and require the watch to cover that in the mode you will actually use. GPS accuracy, in outline
Every current GPS watch is trustworthy on open ground. Differences show up under tree cover, in steep valleys and among tall buildings, where the signal arrives having bounced off something and the watch has to guess. Multi-band reception helps in exactly those places and little anywhere else, which makes accuracy a real spec that is oversold. On roads, tracks and open trail, a budget watch positions you fine. In forest or a city of towers, where you want pace to stay steady rather than jump around, multi-band earns its place. Maps are the most expensive feature
Nothing else adds as much to the price, and three different things get sold under the word navigation. A breadcrumb is a line on a blank screen showing your loaded route and your position on it: it tells you that you have left the route, not what is around you. Full offline maps put terrain, paths and place names on the watch, so you can improvise a way home when a path is flooded. Phone-dependent maps look like the second and behave like the first once the phone is flat or out of signal.

Screens: AMOLED or MIP
AMOLED is bright, sharp and colourful, and it lights every pixel, so it costs battery, especially always-on. Memory-in-pixel reflects ambient light rather than emitting it, which makes it dim indoors, clearer the brighter the day gets, and very frugal with power.
Choose by where you look at it. In direct summer sun a MIP display is readable at a glance, with no gesture and no delay, which is why it survives on watches built for long days outdoors. At night, indoors, or if this is also your everyday watch, AMOLED is nicer to live with. A screen you cannot read mid-session is a real problem, not a cosmetic one.
Training metrics, and how much is actionable
Pace, distance, elevation, heart rate and time are measurements. Almost everything above that layer, including training load, recovery time, readiness, fitness estimates and race predictions, is a model built on those measurements. Models can be useful, but they are not facts, they are not comparable between brands, and two watches on one wrist will disagree.
The test for any metric is whether it changes a decision. If a readiness score makes you take a rest day you would otherwise have forced, it earned its place. If you read it, disagree and train as planned, it is decoration. Which metrics matter works through the rest. Size, comfort and sleeping in it
A large case on a small wrist rocks as you move, which loosens the strap, which makes the optical sensor worse. If the case overhangs your wrist bone it will annoy you every session. Most ranges come in two sizes, the smaller one carrying shorter battery life, and that is a fair trade if the big one does not fit.
Sleeping in it is a separate question. Overnight numbers only exist if you wear the thing to bed, and plenty of people will not. A small band is more comfortable for that and cheap enough to own alongside a sports watch. Sleep staging on any of these devices is an algorithm's estimate rather than a measurement, so treat trends as interesting and single nights as noise.

If two rows describe you, buy for the harder one only when it happens often. Once a year is a borrowing problem, not a buying problem. The watch finder asks the same questions one at a time.
Common mistakes: what people pay for and never use
Full offline maps top the list. Biggest single cost, and unused on the wrists of people who run the same twelve routes. Multi-week battery is next: valuable for expeditions, irrelevant if you charge the watch while you shower on Sundays.
Then the smaller ones. Music storage, bought so you can leave the phone at home, by people who take the phone anyway. Contactless payment, set up once and forgotten. Solar charging, which helps meaningfully only with a lot of direct sun. Blood oxygen and ECG style features, which are wellness features rather than clinical measurements and no substitute for seeing a doctor. Dive and golf modes on a watch bought for running. Titanium and sapphire, lovely, and irrelevant to the data.
The other half of the mistake is underbuying on what never appears on a spec sheet: strap comfort, screen readability in your conditions, and an app pleasant enough that you keep using it. Those decide whether you wear the watch at all.

Is an expensive watch more accurate?
For distance and pace on open ground, not in any way you would notice. Multi-band reception, more common on pricier models but not exclusive to them, helps under tree cover and among tall buildings. Do I need a watch at all if I have a phone?

Should I buy last year's model?
