Choose a bike helmet by fit first and everything else second. A helmet is designed to manage the energy of an impact and reduce the risk of head injury in a crash, and it can only do that if it is sitting where it should be when you hit something. Every helmet from a reputable retailer meets the safety standard for your market, so the real decision is which shape sits level and still on your head, with the ventilation and coverage your riding needs.

Fit is the dominant factor, and it is not close

A helmet that shifts on your head is protecting a spot you are not going to land on. In a crash you tend to rotate before you touch down, and a lid loose enough to slide will move further. Nothing on the spec sheet compensates, which is why a well fitted budget helmet beats an expensive one in the wrong shell shape.

Measure your head

Run a soft tape around the widest part of your skull, roughly a centimetre above your eyebrows and above your ears, level all the way round. Measure twice. Brands size to that number, but shells differ in shape as well as circumference: some run long and oval, some rounder. At the edge of a size, try both and let fit decide, not the label.

The four checks

  • The eyebrow gap. The front rim should sit about two finger widths above your eyebrows, low enough that the shell covers your forehead. Tipped back with the forehead bare is the most common error on the road, and it uncovers the part of the head most likely to land.
  • The side straps. Each pair should meet in a narrow V just under and slightly forward of the earlobe, ear free. If the junction sits on your jaw or the strap presses on your ear, move the sliders.
  • The chin strap. Buckle it so one finger fits underneath and no more. Then open your mouth wide: you should feel the helmet pull down onto the top of your head. If nothing moves, it is loose.
  • The shake test. Done up, rock the helmet forward, back and side to side. It should move the skin of your forehead rather than slide over it. Then shake your head hard. Movement means the dial, the straps or the size is wrong.

Retention systems

Almost every helmet uses a cradle at the back of the head tightened by a dial. What separates a good system from a poor one is height adjustment: raising or lowering the cradle changes how the helmet sits at the front, so one that moves vertically fits far more heads than one that only tightens. The cradle holds position, it does not hold the helmet on in a crash. That is the straps' job, so do not skip the strap checks.

What the certification marks mean

A helmet sold legally for cycling carries a mark showing it passed the standard for that market: CPSC in the United States, EN 1078 in Europe, AS/NZS 2063 in Australia and New Zealand. These are pass or fail thresholds, not a quality ranking, and there is no grading within them. One certified helmet is not safer than another by virtue of the mark alone.

That cuts both ways. You need not spend heavily to get a certified helmet, and the mark cannot tell you which of two helmets handles the angled impacts the protocols do not fully reproduce. For that, look at independent ratings, covered in our guide to MIPS and rotational protection.

Rotational protection, in outline

Certification testing is built around straight-line impacts. Most real crashes are angled, so the head is twisted as well as struck. MIPS and its competitors are slip-plane systems designed to allow a little movement between your head and the shell in that kind of impact, with the aim of reducing the rotational forces transmitted to the head.

Ventilation, coverage and weight

Vents and coverage pull against each other. Bigger vents move more air on a climb at the cost of shell material; deeper shells hold heat but cover more of the head and shed rain better. Road helmets sit at the ventilated end because road riders make heat at speed with a headwind to help them. Trail helmets sit at the coverage end because off-road speeds are lower and the falls are messier.

Weight matters less than buyers assume. Most riders never notice the spread between a light helmet and a heavy one, though neck fatigue on long days is real. Judge the two together: a helmet that runs cool feels lighter than the scale suggests.

The overlap is wide: a trail helmet on the road is warm and the visor tugs at speed, and a road helmet on mellow gravel is fine. The place not to compromise is bike park and steep descending, where a chin bar does a job no half shell can.

When to replace it

Replace a helmet after any impact, including one that leaves no visible mark. The liner works by crushing to absorb energy, and crushed foam does not come back. A hairline crack hides easily under an intact shell. A knock off the handlebars is a different matter.

Absent a crash, common manufacturer guidance is replacement every three to five years, on the basis that sweat, UV and heat degrade the foam and straps. Treat that as a rule of thumb rather than an expiry date and inspect as you go: liner cracking or crumbling, frayed straps, a buckle that no longer clicks, a cracked cradle. A helmet that spent the summer on a parcel shelf has aged faster than one kept indoors.

Why the expensive helmet is not the safer one

Above the certification threshold, most of the money buys things that are not protection: lighter shells, more elaborate ventilation, aero shaping, better finishing. Those are fair reasons to spend, and a helmet you enjoy wearing beats one you leave hanging up. But price is not a safety scale, and independent ratings regularly place cheap helmets alongside costly ones.

The priority order is fit, then coverage suited to your riding, then a rotational system if the helmet you chose offers one, then ventilation and weight. Buy where your money stops buying protection and starts buying comfort, and put the rest toward glasses and gloves, the most neglected protective kit on a bike.

Common mistakes

  • Wearing it tipped back. It feels cooler and uncovers your forehead.
  • Cranking the dial to fix a loose helmet. If it only stays put fully tightened, the size or shape is wrong.
  • Buying online without trying the shape. Circumference gets you the size, not the shell. Buy where returns are easy.
  • Keeping a crashed helmet because it looks fine. The damage is in the liner, and it is often invisible.

Is a more expensive helmet safer?

Not by virtue of price. Every helmet on sale meets the same standard for its market, and the extra money mostly buys ventilation, weight, adjustability and finish. Performance in angled impacts does vary, but it tracks design rather than cost. Fit well within your budget rather than stretching to a model that sits badly.

Do I need a MIPS helmet?

Does a visor make a helmet safer?

A visor shades low sun, keeps spray out of your eyes and takes the sting out of a branch, which is why trail helmets have them. It is not part of the impact protection, and it catches wind at road speeds. Choose it for conditions, not as a safety feature.
