Pips and anti-spin: what they do to incoming spin
The alternatives all reduce contact between surface and ball, which makes them less sensitive to whatever spin arrives. They are chosen by players who would rather blunt their opponent's spin than produce their own.
Short pips
Pimples out, short and relatively stiff. Incoming topspin has much less effect, so a loop that would jump off inverted rubber can be hit flat and early. The classic use is a close-table hitter or blocker, often on the backhand only. The cost is that your own spin, and your loop, largely disappear.

Long pips
Taller, thinner pimples that bend on contact. Rather than gripping the ball they fold and return much of the incoming spin, so your opponent's topspin arrives back at them as backspin. Disruptive and hard to read, which is why choppers love it, but unforgiving: long pips reward a player who knows exactly what their opponent put on the ball.
Anti-spin
Inverted in appearance but with a slick, low-friction topsheet. It barely reacts to spin at all, absorbing pace and returning a dead, floating ball. Used to neutralise heavy attacks and to confuse, since it looks like ordinary inverted rubber from across the table.

Sponge thickness and hardness

Tackiness of the topsheet
Some inverted rubbers, particularly in the Chinese tradition, have a sticky topsheet that will lift a ball resting on it. Tacky rubbers produce extreme spin on serves and slow, heavy loops, because the ball is held rather than gripped, but they demand a committed stroke and punish half-hearted contact. Grippy non-tacky rubbers, the European and Japanese style, engage with less effort across a wider range of stroke speeds. Tackiness also fades faster than grip, so it is the first quality you lose.
Rubber is a consumable
This is the most useful thing on this page. Rubber wears out quietly. With a few sessions a week the topsheet starts losing grip within months, and competitive players replace sheets on a several-month cycle rather than an annual one. Cleaning and care
Care buys time, not immunity. Wipe both sides after every session with a dedicated rubber cleaner, because dust and skin oil blunt grip long before the rubber is finished. Never use household solvents. Store the bat in a case with protective film over each sheet, since air and light degrade the topsheet even when you are not playing. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, and keep your hands clean.
Two sides, two rubbers, two colours
Nothing requires the same rubber on both sides. A common combination is inverted on the forehand for spin and pips on the backhand for blocking. Understand that this is a style commitment: the backhand becomes a different shot, and you may need to twiddle the bat to choose which surface meets the ball.
