Lug depth is a soft-ground tool. Shallow lugs (under about 3 mm) suit hard, dry, compacted surfaces and road sections; moderate lugs (roughly 3 to 4 mm) cover most mixed trail running; deep lugs (about 5 mm and up) are for mud, snow, loose dirt and wet grass, where the tread must penetrate a soft layer to reach something solid. On rock and hardpack, grip comes from rubber compound and contact area rather than depth. Treat every number here as approximate: manufacturers measure differently and revise outsoles between model years.
What a lug actually does
On soft ground, grip is mechanical. The lug sinks into mud, snow or loose dirt and shears against it. What matters is how far it penetrates, how much edge it presents to the way you are pushing, and whether the gaps stay open. Depth dominates.
On hard ground, grip is frictional. Nothing penetrates a rock slab, so grip comes from how much rubber contacts the surface and how well it conforms to microscopic texture. Depth is close to irrelevant and can actively hurt, because tall widely spaced lugs put less rubber down and let the shoe rock on individual blocks. Compound dominates. Almost every real trail mixes the two, which is why most shoes sit in the moderate band.
The three depth bands
Shallow: under roughly 3 mm
Barely-there tread, often a shaped pattern rather than distinct blocks. The door-to-trail and hardpack category: comfortable on tarmac, not lumpy on gravel, long-lived because there is less exposed rubber edge to shear off. It gives up almost everything once the ground turns soft.

Aggressive tread for genuinely soft ground: mud, wet grass, snow, loose scree, steep unconsolidated dirt. The gain is dramatic in those conditions and the penalty is equally clear elsewhere, in a knobbly, unstable ride on hard ground and fast wear.

Shape and spacing matter as much as depth
Spacing. Widely spaced lugs shed mud, tightly packed ones clog. When lugs sit close together, mud packs into the gaps and stays there, because mud sticks to mud better than it sticks to rubber, and you end up running on a smooth mud-coated plate. Wide gaps let each lug flex, and that flex plus the next footfall throws the debris clear. Hence the sparse look of dedicated mud shoes.
Shape. Chevrons and directional lugs are angled so a leading edge digs in when you brake and a trailing edge digs in when you push off. Look at forefoot and heel separately: they usually point in opposite directions for that reason. Square or multi-directional blocks trade some braking bite for better behaviour on traverses.
Edge sharpness. Crisp, square-shouldered lugs cut into soft ground, rounded ones smear. It is why a half-worn aggressive shoe underperforms its remaining depth: edges round off before height disappears.
Turn a shoe over before buying. Could mud fall out of those gaps, and are the edges square? Those two answers say more about soft-ground grip than any depth figure.
Rubber compound: the part the spec sheet buries
Outsole rubber sits on a spectrum from soft and sticky to hard and durable, and you cannot have both at once. Softer compounds deform into the tiny irregularities of a rock surface, which is what produces grip on wet stone, slick roots and damp slab. That same softness abrades faster, especially on abrasive granite and tarmac. Harder compounds last considerably longer and skate on wet rock. Many shoes hedge by zoning: stickier rubber under the forefoot and outer edges, harder rubber where wear concentrates.
Brand-named compounds are reasonable shorthand for the sticky end of the range, but not a guarantee: one name covers several formulations, and the version used varies by model and year.
The practical rule: if your trails are rocky and often damp, prioritise compound over depth and accept shorter outsole life. If they are soft and rarely rocky, prioritise depth and spacing, since you are not relying on friction anyway.

Matching terrain to lug depth
A starting point, not a specification. The bands overlap, and a shoe near a boundary usually works either side of it.

What happens when you run deep lugs on tarmac
The ride feels vague and harsh. Tall lugs are small rubber columns. On a hard flat surface your weight sits on their tips and they squirm under load, which reads as a slightly wobbly feel with more vibration into the foot.
Wear accelerates sharply. Tarmac is abrasive and perfectly flat, so it grinds lug tips continuously instead of letting them sink into anything. Aggressive outsoles lose height much faster on road than on trail.
The shoe loses its purpose before it looks worn out. Once the lugs have lost a couple of millimetres and the edges have rounded, it no longer bites in mud even though the upper looks new. Trail shoes tend to expire by outsole and midsole, which is covered in when to replace trail shoes.
A few minutes of pavement to the trailhead is nothing. But if a real share of your weekly mileage is hard surface, an aggressive outsole is grip you cannot use and are wearing out anyway. The beginner shoe guide sorts shoes by exactly that kind of situation.
Common mistakes
Reading depth as a grip rating. Depth predicts soft-ground performance only. On rock, hardpack and tarmac, more depth usually means less grip, because contact area drops.
Comparing millimetres across brands. There is no shared standard for where a lug is measured from, and geometry varies within a single outsole. Treat any quoted figure as a band, not a measurement.
Buying a mud shoe for a wet climate. Wet is not the same as soft. Wet rock and roots need sticky rubber, and deep lugs on smooth wet slab can be worse than useless.

Questions people ask
Is deeper always grippier in mud?
Up to a point, then spacing takes over. A deep outsole with tightly packed lugs clogs into a slick plate, at which point a shallower shoe with open spacing beats it. The mud itself sets another limit: once lugs are longer than the soft layer is deep, extra depth buys nothing and only adds instability.
How much lug wear is too much, and do deep lugs last longer?
Judge by function, not height. Rounded shoulders on the forefoot lugs, smooth patches of exposed midsole under the landing zone, or slipping on ground the shoe used to handle all mean the outsole has done its job. The rule of thumb of roughly 300 to 500 miles per pair is a planning figure, not a measurement, and it shortens on abrasive rock or pavement. Deep lugs start with more rubber to lose but usually pair with softer compounds on rougher ground, so they rarely last longer in practice.
What about carbide studs or spikes?
Ice is a different problem again, and it defeats both mechanisms: nothing penetrates it and rubber does not grip it. If you regularly run frozen ground, screw-in studs or a proper spiked shoe are the answer, and no lug depth substitutes for them.
